The Austrian government, private organizations and universities offer a number of scholarships to foreigners.As in some other countries, a special agency is established in Austria – the Austrian Academic Exchange Office OAD (Oesterreichische Austausch dienst), which distributes all grants to foreign students. AUSTRIAN EXCHANGE OFFICE (OEAD)

The Austrian Exchange Office (OEAD) was founded in 1961 on the basis of a joint decision by Austrian universities. In recent years, OEAD has been offering a broader range of international cooperation services in the fields of education and science. The network includes not only universities but also other higher education institutions as well as Austrian schools. The main purpose of the organization is scientific and educational exchange. OEAD manages a wide range of scholarship programs from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Ecology, and the Ministry of Social Policy. OEAD provides the following services:

  • Support at national level for European Union programs such as Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci.
  • Conducting scholarship programs and supporting research projects.
  • Counseling and assistance to foreign students and scholars who come to Austria.
  • Organizing preparatory courses for foreign students in Vienna, Leoben and Graz with the support of relevant universities.
  • Reference information and counseling: maintenance of interactive scholarship and project databases, issue of publications, conducting information events.

SCHOLARSHIPS OF THE AUSTRIAN REPUBLIC SCHOLARSHIPS FUND

For students, graduates and postgraduate students (fur Undergraduate, Graduates und Postgraduates)

The scholarship is awarded to students, university graduates, postgraduate students from all over the world for study and research at Austrian higher education institutions in the fields of natural sciences, technical sciences, humanities and social sciences, economics, fine arts.

The duration of the scholarship is 4 months.

 

For PhDs (fur Postdocs)

The scholarship is awarded to PhDs from all over the world (except Austria) for research at Austrian institutions in the fields of natural sciences, technical sciences, humanities and social sciences, economic sciences, fine arts.

Duration of the scholarship: 4 – 12 months.

Deadline for submissions: March 1, every year.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS

(ESI Junior Research Fellowships in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics)

The scholarship is awarded to postgraduate and PhD students from around the world for research in research projects at the Erwin Schroedinger International Institute for Mathematical Physics (ESI) in the fields of: mathematics, physics, mechanics.

Duration of studies: 2-6 months (beginning in March or September of each year).

(Scholarships for the Vienna PhD School of Informatics)

 

The scholarship is awarded to postgraduate students from all over the world for postgraduate study at the School of Informatics at the Vienna Technical University in the fields of mathematics, computer science.

Duration of study: 3 years.

The deadline for submitting documents is May annually.

ERNST MAKH WORLD SCHOLARSHIP

(Ernst Mach Stipendium – weltweit)

The scholarship is awarded to postgraduate students and PhDs’ for study and research at higher education institutions in Austria in the fields of: natural sciences, technical sciences, humanities and social sciences, economic sciences, fine arts. Duration of scholarship: 1 – 9 months.

The deadline for submissions is March 1, every year. Applications for short-term grants (1 to 3 months) are reviewed from January to June.

AWARD IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

(EFGE Excellence Award in Chemical Engineering (Europäische Föderation für Chemie-Ingenieur-Wesen)

The award is given by the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (Europäische Föderation für Chemie-Ingenieur-Wesen) to PhDs’ who conduct research and have made significant contributions to the field of chemical engineering.

The deadline for submitting documents is March 1, every 2 years.

SCHOLARSHIP OF THE HENRY JORG FUND

(Scholarships from the Dr.-Heinrich-Jörg-Stiftung (Faculty of Science of the University of Graz)

The scholarship is awarded to foreign scientists and researchers for research (in the framework of joint scientific projects) with scientists of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Graz.
